According to a study by the London School of Economics (LSE), shouting at children when they misbehave, rather than reasoning with them, is more harmful to their overall behaviour.
Key findings from research conducted by Dr Laure de Preux shows that excessive shouting and punishment can increase a child's behavioural problems whilst calmly sitting down and reasoning with children has no adverse impact on their behaviour.
The effects of yelling can be long term and include low self esteem and increased agression.
Unfortunately the research does not advise on specific, positive alternative approaches but it should be enough to make us stop and think, take a breath, count to 10 and calm down before we let fly.
